Good Family Trips -- Vicksburg and Shiloh
Grant's demand for an unconditional surrender became associated with his initials U.S. The unknown general soon was a sensation with the victory in a North looking for good news. In Dover you can visit the old hotel where the surrender occurred on February 16, 1862. A peaceful setting today the Cumberland River adds to the scenic ness, and I really enjoyed my short visit in Dover and at the park.

Battery at Ft Donelson
The Shiloh National Military Park is near Savannah Tennessee. It is 130 miles from Dover Tennessee. The route between the two parks will run close to Nashville. You can go to the Opry or visit other Nashville attractions not Civil War related. The fall of Ft Donelson soon led to the evacuation of Nashville TN by March 1, 1862 most of Western Tennessee was under Union control. Nathan Bedford Forrest led 700 of his troops out of Dover before the surrender. Forrest continued to be the Union's most formidable cavalry opponent until his surrender at Gainesville AL, on May 9, 1865.
