Packers - Bears, Betty White and Hoopla
I want two hours away from our daily trauma -- Bears Packers in NFL opener
September 4, 2019
I would predict a close game and wouldn’t be confident of predicting a Packer victory. I do have the contrarian view going for a Packer victory. All five Chicago Sun-Times sports columnists picked the Bears. Knowing the way Chicago fans think this must be a bad omen. Last year the injured Aaron Rodgers returned and began engineering a monumental Packer comeback. As this was beginning to come together my wife started cheering for the Bears. I informed her this was not allowed in our marriage, cheer the Bears anytime not in a game with Green Bay. Her cousin is Ryan Pace’s mother-in-law. She and her husband are from our very small hometown. She was afraid Mr. Pace would lose his job. He has managed a spectacular turn around in Chicago. After game one last year the Bears made his job very secure. As secure as a general manager can be in today’s sports world. Therefore, this year I expect adherence to our family rules; cheer the Bears any week they do not play the Packers. Especially this Thursday night, on this night I want to simply believe with a child like simplicity. I need a break from the angst of every day life. Today, Trump is even lying about weather maps. The agricultural economy is a mess. The environment is being devastated by Trump corruption, and yes football itself needs a house cleaning. I need a couple hours off from the deep depression we are in. I will cheer for the Packers, and win or lose I will still be a fan.
I want all players Bears and Packers to have a good game and walk away unhurt. Some day they may take away the helmets to avoid concussions, but one century in we have reached this pinnacle. Athletic players on the big stage of modern football making dazzling plays. For two hours I am returning to 1965. Before it all spun out of control, when I was still a believer like the Monkees.
