We should respect people, but we do not owe them dishonesty
January 24, 2020
A short note - we should respect people, but we do not owe them dishonesty. I have posted news on Facebook about impeachment as public this past week. I usually just post to a list of people, who I think would not be irritated by my posts. Trump is on trial, but truly our nation is also on trial. It is a crisis of conscience that none of us, even those who claim they are exhausted by politics, can ignore as good citizens. We have torn at our hearts in opposing directions for too long. All the politicians who once held one view are now saying the opposite. It is this inauthenticity that repels us all.
I cannot appeal to anyone and expect them to lay aside their
prejudices, their predispositions, their beliefs, and their tribes. I
would ask that we seek honesty and truth, not the spin of a partisan
lens. The defense of President Trump has moved beyond his petty and
narcissistic behavior; it has become an attack on the very pillars of
our democratic republic. If to defend Trump we must attack the FBI,
State Department, CIA, Congress, Judiciary, Journalism, and Academic
expertise, then we undermine our future.
Trump was not the road to this moment; he is merely the destination where we find ourselves. We have allowed truth to be what the wealthy and powerful say it is. We all know climate change is truly the greatest global threat. People state what they are paid to believe, and others not on the payroll support them because of brand loyalty. I ask everyone please ask for honesty, please respect how difficult it is for people to oppose their own chosen side. Pointing out all the evils of the other side does not address the actual acts of the Trump administration. Stop the both siderism it is easy to find weak and dishonest people on all sides.
Our Republic is posed to cast off in a raft on the raging waters of
unrestrained behavior. All this unknown risk to occur while we cannot
even agree we are on a river. Where will it end? Yes, fellow citizens
I respect you. I know how hard it is to break the bonds of an
automatic and unthinking response. We cannot allow the passion of our
factions to undermine the foundations of American ideals. Please do
not allow partisanship to destroy our ability to self govern
ourselves. We are a nation where truth and justice have always been
our highest ideals. Respect others, demand facts and honesty, and try
to be kind to those who are lost in the wilderness of passion. But
please think of the long course of history and those Americans we hold
in esteem and those Americans whose actions embarass us. Be one of the
former, not the later.
